Elvaston Castle. Historic past; glorious future.

Highgate Sanctuary Ltd

Local people

Following the announcement of its draft proposals to restore Elvaston Castle, Highgate Sanctuary invited the public to comment so that their ideas could help develop the detailed plans before they are submitted to South Derbyshire District Council for the formal planning process.

The company distributed 61,000 leaflets via the Derby Telegraph (October 2005) and produced a further 4,000 for distribution at the Castle’s tea rooms. Of the 135 public responses there was a clear majority in support of the plans, either unreservedly, or subject to some queries being addressed. Areas of concern related to vehicle access, continuing public access to the gardens and questions regarding the Nature Reserve and Golf course and we are addressing all of these in the preparation of our planning application.

Positive comments about the proposals included:-

“As local residents, we feel that your plans for Elvaston Castle will be a benefit to the majority of the local community.”

“Derbyshire could well and truly be put on the map.”

“It will be lovely to see the Hall returned to its former glory.”

“It’s the best thing that can be done for the Castle. I think people’s fears have been allayed.”

Local residents and groups have formed the Elvaston Castle Hotel Positive Action Group. Their aim is to help shape the plans for the Estate's future and to be able to learn more about Highgate Sanctuary's commitment to building a sustainable use for the Castle.
